Enduring Shield

The modern battlefield requires advanced solutions to counter ever-evolving threats. Enduring Shield, developed by the Dynetics team at Leidos, stands as a prime example of innovation responding to these pressing challenges.

Selected in September 2021 for the Enduring Indirect Fire Protection Capability program, the Enduring Shield weapon system, also known as IFPC Enduring, is a stride in defensive technologies. A part of the Department of Defense's layered defense strategy, this ground-based mobile system serves a dual purpose: combatting cruise missiles and unmanned aircraft systems.

Understanding the modern threatscape, the Indirect Fire Protection Capability Increment 2 program acknowledges the gaps present between tactical short-range air defense systems and strategic systems. Enduring Shield is specifically designed to bridge this divide. The primary aim is to safeguard both civilian and military infrastructure – from hospitals to government facilities. Given the system's adaptability, it can be easily transported across various mediums and ensures 360-degree coverage up to 16 square kilometers with four launchers in a platoon.

In terms of progress, Enduring Shield is already in preparation for the Internal Risk Reduction Flight Demo tentatively slated for2024. A crucial component of the system's efficacy will be its integration with current Army software, notably the Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS). The weapon system seamlessly slots within the Army's Air & Missile Defense structure, thanks to consistent feedback from Army stakeholders.

Enduring Shield is comprised of a launcher and a magazine, each accommodating six missiles. This gives the system an impressive missile count of 18, with the added advantage of easy magazine disposability and replacement during battle.

A standout feature of the Enduring Shield is its missile agnosticism. As missile technologies evolve, the program can be effortlessly updated. This adaptability is in line with the Dynetics team’s ongoing collaboration with the U.S. Army to continually assess and adapt to future requirements.

Enduring Shield is on display at the 2023 AUSA Annual Meeting in Hall A, Leidos booth #1039.
